"content_text": "Maru Tombacco’s photographs overturn the habits of looking. We are accustomed to perceiving the objects around us as separate, distinct entities. The artist breaks through that protective distance and enters the innards of things with her camera. She creates a strange world in which objects take command over those who look at them. Tombacco reverses the logic of the photographic device—or, rather, shatters it. If the image was a mirror that confirmed our identity as subjects, that mirror has now been broken into pieces. The artist imagines a world full of potential eyes spying on us from the corners, making the simplest moments of our everyday existence ambiguous and unsettling. Familiar settings become dizzying and confusing. In the 1930s, Walter Benjamin compared photography to surgery and psychoanalysis because of its ability not to imitate the surface of things, but to penetrate beyond the limits of human vision. Photographic images are opaque like the movement of our organs, like the mysterious logic of the unconscious. They show us no clear evidence; they require our careful interpretation. Maru Tombacco reveals the hidden reverse side of human objectivity. There is clearly humor in these artifice, but the laughter they provoke is uneasy, because it unsettles everything familiar in our lives. The images do not reproduce what is visible; they insidiously sketch the limits of our thought.",
